The overall objective of this project was to carry out coordinated research and development to upgrade gas combustion engines for use in non-electric multiple units. The results of this study have provided theoretical basic data and technical prerequisites for the realization of engine development and multiple unit retrofitting in the subsequent implementation projects of the TRAINS alliance.

The results of the study provided the theoretical basis for the conversion of diesel multiple units to a gas engine drive and the implementation in a demonstrator. Experience was gained in the field of alternative-powered, overhead line-independent rail vehicles, including the ecological advantages, safety considerations and infrastructure. Initially, the results of the project will serve as preparation for the direct successor project “UV14 Efficient gas engine drive systems for multiple units” (schedule 2021 – 2023), which deals with the development of the gas engine, tank system and a concrete concept for the H2 infrastructure.

Subsequently, in “UV15 Development and demonstration of green mobility” (schedule 2023 – 2025), the investigated multiple unit is to be retrofitted and run as a demonstrator in the region. Subsequently, the findings are to be deepened and the technologies further developed so that they can be transferred to other multiple unit models, regions and completely different sectors (planned from 2025). In addition, the results will also be used to support the training of young scientists and engineers as part of internships and the supervision of theses and doctorates.
