TRAINS UV15: Multiple-unit train demonstrator with a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine
With the multiple-unit train demonstrator from the TRAINS UV15 collaborative project, WTZ Roßlau, together with its project partners, is demonstrating how hydrogen technology can be practically implemented for rail transport. To this end, an existing LINT diesel multiple unit is being equipped with an innovative hydrogen combustion engine.

Innovations become exciting when they get moving🚆🌱
There’s a lot to say about the hashtag #Innovation. The key is to put it into practice.
What looks like a hashtag #Demonstrator today is the result of countless tests, intensive research, numerous development and testing phases, and a number of technical challenges.

That is exactly what innovation is all about: trying things out, thinking ahead, making improvements, and not giving up when the first approach doesn’t lead to the desired result.
On September 8 and 9, 2026, together with our project partners Alstom, Gedack Rohrsysteme GmbH, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, and Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, presented the multiple-unit train demonstrator for the TRAINS UV15 joint project at Alstom’s facility in Stendal. An existing #LINT diesel multiple unit is being retrofitted with an innovative #hydrogen internal combustion engine.
The demonstrator shows how research can lead to concrete solutions for real-world applications and, at the same time, marks an important milestone for this project.
After all, not every solution starts from scratch. Often, the real innovation lies in rethinking tried-and-true methods and adapting them for the future. 💡

Many thanks to all participants and guests for the interesting discussions, the valuable insights, and the great interest in our demonstrator!
The project is being carried out as part of the “𝗪𝗜𝗥! – 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻” program by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Aerospace and supported by the Jülich Project Management Agency (PtJ).
