Development of the demonstrator combustion process in ammonia operation and testing of ammonia injection components under near-field conditions - AmmoniaMot2
The joint project AmmoniaMot 2 aims to use the positive results of the predecessor project AmmoniaMot to implement a complete motorized ship propulsion solution, consisting of an ammonia-compatible medium-speed engine, the necessary injection components and a modularized fuel treatment technology, for operation with regeneratively produced ammonia as fuel in a demonstration plant.

Basic combustion process tests on the FM18 single-cylinder research engine
Building on the very successful investigations on the WTZ research engine in the AmmoniaMot project, fundamental investigations for different ammonia combustion processes are to take place in the first project phase. The research framework will be kept more generous in order to support the work on the medium-speed engine on the one hand and to investigate innovative injection concepts and combustion process technologies on the other.
Detailed combustion process tests on the medium-speed engine
Together with project partner MAN Energy Solutions, various ammonia dual-fuel combustion processes are also initially being investigated on the medium-speed engine and evaluated in terms of engine performance and emissions behavior as well as development costs up to series production readiness. Following a concept decision, the target-oriented process will finally be detailed on a demonstrator and the interaction of all subsystems (combustion process, injection technology, exhaust gas aftertreatment, engine control) will be tested.

Ammonia fuel system demonstration plant
In addition to the development of the engine technology, the development of NH3-compatible injection components and an NH3 fuel module also play an important role in the project. A comprehensive test infrastructure consisting of an NH3 tank system for storage at -33 °C, a CAPSAM module of the project partners NSD and GenSys and an NH3 injector test bench as a joint development with the partner WLO will be set up on the premises of WTZ Roßlau gGmbH to test these subsystems.

The ammonia fuel system demonstration plant will enable endurance testing and characterization of high-pressure ammonia injectors at injection pressures of up to 700 bar.
