A significant step towards a sustainable (and decarbonized) future for marine internal combustion engines.
Over a period of 3.5 years, we were able to work successfully with our partners MAN Energy Solutions, Woodward L’Orange GmbH, Neptun Ship Design and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) on the development of an innovative dual-fuel combustion process.
This process relies on high-pressure ammonia direct injection with diffusive ammonia combustion to enable the use of regeneratively produced ammonia as an environmentally friendly fuel in marine propulsion systems.
Aim of the project: ➡️ Testing ammonia as an environmentally friendly fuel for ships.
The results are promising: >95 % ammonia content, nitrous oxide <10 ppm, ammonia-NOx ratio < 1.
👉 Ideal conditions for exhaust gas aftertreatment with an SCR catalytic converter.
❗This has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 % without compromising engine performance.
In view of the success of the Hashtag#AmmioniaMot project, the launch of the follow-up project “AmmoniaMot 2” is already imminent.
