New fuels = new challenges for materials? 🤔

The use of methanol as a regenerative fuel can pose a number of challenges. ➡️ Especially for the material of the injectors.

How can we counter this?

A central question that concerns many – and we at WTZ Roßlau provide the answers!

Conventional test methods are not sufficient in the case of methanol-powered injectors.

Methanol as a fuel has specific chemical and physical properties that differ greatly from conventional fuels such as gasoline or diesel.

❗That is why we are developing new test systems to simulate long-term behavior under real-life conditions and thus provide important new findings.❗

For example, we examined the fatigue strength of materials (for methanol injectors) in different test media.

➡️ Initial findings show:

✅ 40 % lower fatigue strength of the sample in a methanol-salt-water mixture compared to air

✅ Macroscopic examinations show → Corrosion leads to cracking on the surface.

These results can be used to determine safety factors, which in turn are taken into account in the design of the injectors.

The aim of such test procedures is to ensure safe and long-lasting use of the components WITHOUT corrosion damage.

Our vision: Innovative engines for a sustainable future – powered by renewable fuels.
